Fellow Procrastinators! Start Training for the Bellin Run

May 9, 2014

If your training regimen has begun slower than the arrival of spring, you still have time to get out and do some training to ensure a fulfilling experience on race day.

A complete training guide for runners and walkers can be found under the Training header on the Bellin Run website’s homepage. According to the guide, formal training for the Bellin Run should have started Sunday, March 30. But it’s never too late to start, said Nate Vandervest, a running expert at Bellin Fitness.

“The training guide is just that – a guide,” he said. “We do recommend that you start training now for a positive experience later. The key at this point in your training should be to get out and log some mileage. Start today, gradually build your mileage and adjust your race-day performance expectations.

“Set reasonable goals and work to attain them. Most of all, enjoy the experience.”

The Bellin Run 10K will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 14. The 6.2-mile race takes runners and walkers though the streets of Green Bay and Allouez. Last year, 20,000 people registered for the Bellin Run. It marked a registration record for the annual event.

Bellin Run participants run the gamut in terms of ability levels. There are elite athletes as well as casual runners and walkers.

“It’s an event that lends itself to all participants,” said Linda Maxwell, assistant race director for the Bellin Run. “It’s an inviting event and at just over 6 miles, it’s the right challenge level for seasoned athletes as well as first-timers.”

Runners and walkers who need a little help getting started with their training can attend the free training sessions taking place Wednesdays at Bellin Fitness West and Bellin Fitness East. The sessions help train prospective runners and walkers for the June 14 run/walk.

“We’re just over a month away from race day, so no more procrastinating. Get out there, start training, and we’ll see you on June 14,” Vandervest said.
