I just ran the Marathon; can I do the Bellin Run?
May 16, 2011
So you just did the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon. Can you still do the Bellin Run?
Yes you can. All you need is a well-thought-out strategy and you’ll be adding the Bellin Run to your list of 2011 road race achievements.
The 35th annual Bellin Run will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 11. The 6.2-mile event winds through the streets of Green Bay and Allouez.
Nate Vandervest, a running specialist at Bellin Health, says the key to transitioning to training for the Bellin Run is for marathoners to rest, relax and recover.
But recovery doesn’t mean sitting around and letting your training go to waste. After all, there are only 27 days between the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon and the Bellin Run. Recovery means cutting back on the intense training and the distance runs associated with marathon training.
“Instead, get a massage, do dynamic warm-ups or static stretches and mix in some cross-training or a few light runs,” Vandervest said. “These are all great ways to ease through your recovery time.”
Once you feel recovered – a week or so of light exercise or activity is not uncommon – prepare to get back to your normal training routine.
“You already have the conditioning to do the Bellin Run, just give your body the rest that it needs after the Cellcom,” Vandervest said. “If you follow these tips, you should have a fulfilling Bellin Run experience.”
