Organizers need public’s help to stop COVID so in-person race is possible

Green Bay’s iconic 10K run/walk is planning a comeback for 2022 — but Bellin Run organizers say they need the public’s help to ensure an in-person event is possible amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Registration is now open for the 46th annual event on Saturday, June 11, 2022. Organizers say they have the knowledge and tools they need to safely host an outdoor event, but having the support and resources to do so depends on reducing the burden of COVID-19 infections on local hospitals.

“Bellin Hospital continues to experience incredibly high patient volumes, both generally and in our COVID and COVID ICU units,” said executive race director Randy Van Straten. “This event takes months of planning, and we will not be able to devote the staff time we need to make it happen unless the coronavirus picture improves. We implore our participants and community to get vaccinated, get boosted, mask up and take other steps to stop the spread — not just for the sake of our event, but because it could literally save your life.”

The Bellin Run has a tradition of opening registration during the holiday season so runners and walkers can commit to training as part of their fitness goals in the New Year, said assistant race director Linda Maxwell.

“The coronavirus pandemic has taken a collective toll on our physical and mental health, and we know having a goal like the Bellin Run is a terrific incentive to get moving and stay moving,” Maxwell said. “We have had strong participation in our virtual events these past two years, but we know there is nothing like being together in person. We want to make it happen, but we can’t do it alone.”

The 10K (6.2-mile) Bellin Run course traverses the streets of Green Bay and Allouez each second Saturday in June. It is one of the largest 10K events in the country.

Bellin Run participants are well supported in their training, with free weekly training run/walk events tentatively scheduled to begin March 23. All levels and abilities are welcome for these sessions, which are held at 6 p.m. Wednesdays at Bellin Health Titletown Sports Medicine & Orthopedics, 1970 S. Ridge Road.

Early registration for the Bellin Run 10K event is $25, while the half-mile June 10 Children’s Run costs $12. Signing up or gifting a registration is quick and easy at www.bellinrun.com.

The 45th annual Bellin Run, held virtually, recorded more than 5,100 participants. Thanks to the event’s virtual format, the event welcomed participants from 32 states, as well as Afghanistan, Singapore and Germany. More information about the event is available at www.bellinrun.com. Information about COVID-19, including the COVID-19 vaccine, is available at bellin.org/covid19.

The 46th annual Bellin Run is scheduled to take place at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 11. For more information or to register, visit bellinrun.com. Follow the Bellin Run on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
